Published in Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine, the randomized, placebo-controlled trial examined body morphology measures, metabolic indicators, and selected safety parameters among adults with overweight or obesity who received the AKK001™ and tributyrin combination.

The study, titled “Akkermansia muciniphila 001 (AKK001™) Postbiotic and Butyrate (Tributyrin) Impact on Body Morphology Measures and Metabolic Indicators in an Overweight Population: A Randomized, Controlled Trial,” evaluated 60 otherwise healthy adults with overweight or obesity. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either placebo or one capsule daily containing 1.5 × 10¹⁰ TFU of pasteurized AKK001™ plus 150 mg of butyrate as tributyrin for 90 days.

Study Findings Across Body Morphology and Metabolic Measures

At 90 days, the investigators reported statistically significant between-group differences across the study’s primary body morphology measures and several secondary metabolic outcomes. Reported findings included:

– Lower mean body weight and body fat percentage compared with placebo at 90 days (75.3 vs. 82.5 kg and 25.6% vs. 29.8%, respectively)
– Lower waist circumference and ultrasound-measured abdominal fat thickness compared with placebo
– Favorable differences in glucose regulation and lipid metabolism, including total cholesterol of 166.3 vs. 189.5 mg/dL compared with placebo at 90 days
– Higher estimated basal metabolic rate compared with placebo at 90 days
– No significant differences between groups in measured liver, kidney, or thyroid function parameters after one or three months

The findings add to the emerging clinical research on pasteurized Akkermansia muciniphila and support further investigation of AKK001™-based formulations in metabolic health. As AKK001™ was administered with tributyrin, additional studies will help characterize its individual contribution and the biological mechanisms underlying the observed outcomes.
