When the pandemic disrupted communities everywhere, she extended the competition to Jamaica, hoping to offer comfort and reassurance to others during an uncertain time and to remind participants that things would be well. What began as a response to crisis became something participants and supporters urged her to continue. Encouraged by others to keep the Essay Train going in Jamaica, Grace now hopes to bring the competition back to the United States in 2027.

The impact has been tangible. Three years ago, one of the competition’s winners graduated from a university in Jamaica with first-class honors. She has remained grateful for the prize money, which helped cover transportation and books during her studies. Beyond the winners, Grace notes that many women who did not place also benefited from taking part, writing on the competition’s given topics in a stirring and memorable manner.

The procedure carried additional risks because of extensive scar tissue from previous surgeries. Grace understood the seriousness of the situation but chose to move forward.

The recovery was difficult. Following the surgery in July 2025, Grace remained under home health care until November 18, receiving support from a physical therapist, occupational therapist, and registered nurse. She had to learn and manage new aspects of her recovery, including wound care.

Grace has become more conscious of what she eats and more deliberate about taking care of herself.
