Providence New Bedford, RI, October 26, 2026 —
An Op-Ed published in What’s Up Newp features Taryn Mazza, an at-large city council candidate in Newport, making a case for collaborative leadership and active stewardship on the City Council.
Mazza argues that affection for Newport alone is not enough to address the city’s future challenges. The candidate calls for greater civic participation and constructive problem-solving, presenting those approaches as important to the city’s future.
The piece also expresses dissatisfaction with what Mazza describes as a divisive political climate and decision-making. The summary of the Op-Ed does not identify particular decisions, describe specific disputes, or provide examples of the divisions Mazza discusses.
Mazza’s argument centers on how council members and residents should engage with civic issues: through collaboration, participation and problem-solving. The summary does not detail specific policy proposals, planned actions, or changes Mazza would pursue if elected. It also does not provide responses from other candidates, current council members or city officials.
The publication date of the Op-Ed was not provided. The information available does not specify when Mazza made the arguments, identify the future challenges referenced, or describe the candidate’s broader platform. The piece is presented as an opinion article, so its assessment of Newport’s political climate and decision-making is Mazza’s stated perspective.
At its core, the Op-Ed calls for residents and city leaders to take an active, constructive role in addressing Newport’s future, while criticizing what Mazza sees as divisiveness in local politics.
